{"id":7786,"date":"2023-08-21T10:22:01","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T10:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.lascarelectronics.com\/?page_id=7786"},"modified":"2025-11-17T10:20:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T10:20:23","slug":"usb-monitoring-through-the-grapevine","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/case-studies\/data-logging\/usb-monitoring-through-the-grapevine\/","title":{"rendered":"USB: Monitoring Through the Grapevine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Harsh weather conditions affect quality and yield in grapevines.<\/h2>\n<p>Complex grape vine weather conditions have been affecting quality and yield in a Washington vineyard. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8659 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wine-Barrels-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Barrels\" width=\"540\" height=\"306\" \/>To protect the future of the vineyard, growers planned to conduct a study over a 7 month period that involved wrapping plastic covers around their grapevines to record the effects and differences from the covered and uncovered grapes.<\/p>\n<p>To accurately study their vineyard\u2019s microclimate, the owners wanted a low-cost data logging system to record the ambient temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Lascar provided a cost-effective and highly reliable solution with their <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/product\/data-loggers\/temperature-data-loggers\/el-usb-1\/\">EL-USB-1<\/a><\/strong> Temperature Data Loggers. To help protect the loggers from ambient temperature readings from the sun, Lascar also provided two protective shields and protective caps to defend the loggers against moisture to an IP67 standard.<\/p>\n<h2>EL-USB-1<\/h2>\n<p>Lascars <strong><a href=\"\/data-loggers\/temperature-data-loggers\/el-usb-1\/\">EL-USB-1<\/a><\/strong> can measure temperature within a -35\u00b0C to +80\u00b0C (-31\u00b0F to +176\u00b0F) measurement range and can hold more than 16,000 readings. Once set-up, via Lascar\u2019s free <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/easylog-software\/\">EasyLog software<\/a><\/strong>, the device will notify the user via its pre-programmed alarms if the temperature has been breached via its flashing LED\u2019s. The farmers labelled one logger \u201coutside temp\u201d and the other \u201cinside temp\u201d to help distinguish one from the other. The software allows the user to configure their own sample rate, sample rates can be set to every 10s, 1m, 5m, 30m, 1hr, 6hrs or 12hrs. Once these had been set and configuration completed, the<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/data-loggers\/temperature-data-loggers\/el-usb-1\/\"><strong>EL-USB-1<\/strong><\/a> device was ready to go, set to record every 30 minutes for the next 7 months.<\/p>\n<h2>The results<\/h2>\n<p>Once all the data has been collected, the farmers could view the data from the study by plugging in their device into a PC with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/easylog-software\/\">EasyLog Software<\/a><\/strong> installed. From here they could download all the data recorded for analysis. Still using the <strong><a href=\"\/easylog-software\/\">EasyLog Software<\/a><\/strong>, the farmers were able to view, graph, analyze and send on all the data collected on the built-in software.<\/p>\n<p>The data collected from the study benefited the winery\u2019s temperature monitoring in many ways, not only was this a low-cost, easy to use no maintenance needed option but it also provided a full start to finish data logging solution.
