Indoor CO\u2082 levels can also be used as a proxy to indicate the standard of ventilation, a key factor in preventing the spread of airborne diseases<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In order to avoid long-term health effects on building occupants and visitors, many governments around the world have enacted, or are considering, legal requirements for monitoring indoor CO\u2082 levels in offices, factories, schools and other workplaces, including the USA<sup>3<\/sup>, UK<sup>4<\/sup>, Japan\u2075 and Germany<sup>6<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in the UK the Building Regulations (2010), which support the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), require that action should be taken if indoor CO\u2082 concentrations exceed 1500 ppm, with 800 ppm recommended for areas where there are high levels of physical activity.<\/p>\n<p>This legislation also specifies desirable characteristics for CO\u2082 monitors, methods for taking accurate CO\u2082 measurements, and recommended actions to reduce indoor CO\u2082 levels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14120\" src=\"https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1.jpg\" alt=\"Inside an office reception\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-120x63.jpg 120w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-990x520.jpg 990w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-441x232.jpg 441w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-800x420.jpg 800w, https:\/\/lascarelectronics.com\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inside-an-office-reception-1-150x79.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>CO\u2082 Monitor Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>There are many different makes and models of CO\u2082 monitor available, but many are unsuitable for accurate monitoring of indoor concentrations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indoor CO\u2082 levels can vary from as low as 400 ppm to over 5,000 ppm, and so as a minimum the monitor should measure between these limits.<\/li>\n<li>The monitor should directly measure CO\u2082 itself, not provide an estimated CO\u2082 reading based on a different factor such as oxygen levels.<\/li>\n<li>The monitor must be calibrated, to ensure accurate readings, and it should only be used within the recommended calibration period. To do this effectively requires both top-down and bottom-up action, and so the results of monitoring should be discussed with everyone who has responsibility for the way indoor spaces are used and managed, as well as regular users.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve natural ventilation by fully or partly opening windows, air vents and doors, but never prop fire doors open. It can be good practice to fully air a room whenever it is unoccupied.<\/li>\n<li>Use mechanical ventilation, including fans and air conditioning, to bring fresh air into a building from outside. Don\u2019t lower mechanical ventilation rates if the number of people in an area reduces temporarily, ventilation rates should be based on the maximum \u2018normal\u2019 occupancy of an area.<\/li>\n<li>Where possible, reduce occupancy levels in rooms or areas with poor ventilation, for example by staggering working times to decrease the peak number of users.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the way in which an area is utilized: one used for exercise, sport or singing will need higher levels of ventilation to keep CO\u2082 concentrations within recommended limits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ensuring the health and well-being of buildings users is an ongoing duty, and so even when CO\u2082\u00a0levels have been reduced to recommended levels, monitoring must continue as conditions will often change throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, aside from fulfilling legal requirements, CO\u2082 monitoring can play a key role in building maintenance, as any failure or fault with ventilation and air conditioning systems will quickly be revealed in measured CO\u2082 data.<\/p>\n<h3>References<\/h3>\n<p><em>1. \u2018Effects of low-level inhalation exposure to carbon dioxide in indoor environments: A short review on human health and psychomotor<br \/>\nperformance\u2019, by Kenichi Azuma, Naoki Kagi, U.
